Welcome to Moeraki

'Wow! What a fantastic view.' These are usually the first words guests say upon arrival at Noah's Boutique Accommodation when they see our fabulous water views. As we are situated only 3 hours drive from Christchurch International Airport, Noah's is often the first night's stay in New Zealand for overseas travellers. We understand things can be a little different in this country so we will endeavour to help you in any way we can to help make the rest of your trip in our beautiful country as pleasant as possible, so please accept a warm southern welcome.

We have 6 self contained units that are all on ground level. 3 come complete with outdoor baths, to make your stay with us totally relaxing and memorible.  To maintain guests' privacy there is a small private courtyard outside each unit with room to relax on a beautiful day. All rooms are equipped with heating and electric blankets, and include tea/coffee-making facilities.

At Moeraki, 40 kilometres south of Oamaru, huge spherical boulders are scattered along the beach. Others can be seen emerging from the sandstone cliffs. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high.

According to Maori legend, the boulders are gourds washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru when it was wrecked upon landfall in New Zealand hundreds of years ago.

Scientists explain the boulders as calcite concretions formed about 65 million years ago. Crystallization of calcium and carbonates around charged particles gradually formed the boulders in a pearl-like process that took as long as four million years. The soft mudstone containing the boulders was raised from the seabed around 15 million years ago; waves, wind and rain are excavating them one by one.
